Parents and students, welcome to 6th Grade English and Reading. The ability to communicate our ideas is an essential life skill; and we will be doing a lot of writing, as well as expanding our horizons through literature.
When my children were in middle school, I would ask them each day how school went. I quickly tired of two words: "fine" and "nothing": "How was your day?" "Fine." "What did you do?" "Nothing." Not being satisfied with these summaries I would inquire about each subject, one-by-one. Lo-and-behold, work had been done and they would become animated recalling events of the day.
There is nothing more powerful to a successful education than an involved, caring parent. The greatest support you can give to your child is to ask them every day what they did in school. By repeating what they have learned they strengthen their recall, and your asking gives importance to the work we do.
If you have not done so already, I encourage you to sign up for the Parent Portal so that you can track progress. Parents and students can also register to get text reminders of assignments due. Please do not hesitate to e-mail me or leave a telephone message with the office if you have a question, concern, or comment.
